Two Houghton Tour Guides giving a tour outside of the Campus Center

By far one of the most unique jobs students can be hired for is to be a Houghton University Tour Guide. Students who are hired for the tour guide position go through different training procedures, from knowing the routes to walk to knowing how to answer questions to how to communicate effectively while walking backwards. Yes, the Houghton tour guides walk backwards for almost the entire duration of the tour in order to make sure the tour group doesn't get lost or split up.

Johanna Borges is one of Houghton University's current tour guides, where they are tasked with providing tours to guests at least once a week, if there are guests signed up for their assigned hours.

When asked about what their thoughts were on their job as a tour guide, Borges replied that they liked the job and how both officials and guests tended to be very friendly towards them. Borges also said guests and supervisors always tried to connect with them both in and outside of touring times.

"I am able to walk outside while working, and I appreciate how friendly my supervisors are." Borges answered when asked what they found likable working as a tour guide for Houghton University. "I get to meet prospective students, get to know them, and show them what Houghton is like." they added.

Borges also believed that they would be hired as a tour guide for Houghton University. "I love to believe I am a friendly person, and I love getting to know and connecting with new people. I think I fit the job description pretty well." they replied, laughing a little as they did.

"Tour guiding is one of the best jobs I have had on campus. The staff at the Admissions Office ensures that everyone is well-equipped to do a great job while also enjoying giving tours." Borges said when asked about any closing remarks for the interview. "They provide us with tour jackets and advice on how to stay warm. They also created a motivation/reward system through stickers that I believe all of us enjoy."

Overall, being a Houghton University Tour Guide does require training and supervision in order to make sure you represent the university as best as you can, and tour guides have to take tours in rain and shine. But if students are willing to put in the effort, being a tour guide is one of Houghton University's most fulfilling jobs on campus.
